Chapter 7

The Dinner

Rebecca finished her drive home to check on Joey and Bean. They were the best cats a woman could ever dream of. Her curtains and furniture still looked as good as the day she brought them home. They rarely threw up because they were indoor cats and, as far as she knew, didn’t have access to mice in her house – at least not on the floors they were allowed access to. When she was down, they always knew just how to support her.

After walking through the door, the rubbing and purring commenced. She dropped to the floor to enjoy the love. If Rebecca stayed home all day, the cats would sleep around the house as if she wasn’t there. The stack of sofa blankets, the window hammock and the hard floor were all better options than her lap. The exception to the rule of ignoring her during the day was coming home from work, or in this case, sleuthing. Evening snuggles were a completely different story.

After several minutes of belly and chin rubs, she walked to the kitchen, dodging paws and tails along the way. She offered treats on the kitchen floor so she could easily put the wet food in dishes. Once the water was also changed, she made her way upstairs.

Picking out an outfit that didn’t include cats or books was always a challenge. Kenny never said anything, but she figured it might do her well to add some neutral items to her wardrobe for dates at least.

Come to think of it, she didn’t want to change who she was because she was in a relationship. Going to the wedding was one thing, but going on a date was her personal time, and she was going to dress in the way that she wanted. Kenny knew exactly who he was getting when they started dating because of all the time they spent together as friends after his divorce.

She went through the stack of shirts she typically wore to work or around the house. Her mental compromise was a subtle Harry Potter shirt with her house crest featuring a bronze eagle. Too many people got things wrong when it came to the houses, but she was a purist to the source material. Paired with fitted gray capris and wedge flip flops, she felt comfortable and stylish.

Now, what to do with the rest of her day off. The house was clean, and the library was all ready for tomorrow. She decided that a little research never hurt. Following news on runners wasn’t something she did on a regular basis, so she went and got her laptop to check the internet for information on the trio that finished on the podium last year.

She used her computer at home so rarely, she actually had to search for the power cord because the battery was dead. Once everything was sorted, she used a search engine to find articles from last year. This year’s marathon had only been over for just over twenty-four hours, so she figured there wouldn’t be as much information yet.
